Available free through MeL.org, this database provides access to historic images and digital and searchable census records from 1790 through 1930. This resource is available to Michigan residents and requires logging in with a Michigan drivers license or library card.
Created by the War Department in 1865, this organization oversaw “all relief and educational activities relating to refugees and freedmen, including issuing rations, clothing and medicine. The Bureau also assumed custody of confiscated lands or property in the former Confederate States, border states, District of Columbia, and Indian Territory.” This website is a collection of digitized records from the Bureau.
