This site from the British Broadcasting Company provides a 12 week beginner’s course in French, Spanish, German and Italian. There are also beginner and intermediate level lessons for 36 languages. All of these courses and lessons are available for free.

This site can help you select a language to learn, guide you through the process of teaching yourself a language and answer questions about learning languages.
The Annenberg Foundation funds this online initiative to teach foreign languages through video series. The videos offered all stream live, so there is nothing to download, although sign-up is required for first-time users. The languages offered here are English, French, German and Spanish.
Livemocha is an online community for language learners, with free lessons and a global community of users. The lessons can help you learn the basics of a foreign language until you have the confidence to begin carrying on conversations with native speakers.
Mango’s method engages you in real conversations between native speakers to help jump start your skills. Each lesson reviews previous material to help memorization, but you have complete control over your learning experience. You can try the first lesson without signing up, but to continue learning and to track your progress you need to create a free user profile. All you need is your library card number, an email address and a password.
