McLean Collection
Lissa K. McLean - A Lasting LegacyWhen Lissa McLean attended Stoner Elementary School in the Waverly school district, the library had just one women’s history book – on Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross. Lissa checked out the book over and over again, but was frustrated with the school library’s lack of books about women and their impact on history and society.
Thus began her life-long quest and passion to acquire books and materials reflecting the contributions women have made to our communities, our country, and our quality of life. It was one of Lissa McLean’s final wishes before she died of cancer that her hometown receive her collection of more than 600 books, videos, pictures, and pamphlets about women. DTDL now houses this collection in the library's McLean Room.
Many books in the collection are autographed by such authors as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Queen Noor of Jordan. Lissa wanted to share her collection with the Delta Township District Library because she knew it would be accessible to everyone and would be appreciated by the mid-Michigan community. Lissa also set up a committee to oversee and add to the collection.
Lissa K. McLean graduated from Waverly High School in 1975 and from Michigan State University in 1984. She worked for the Michigan Department of Management and Budget until 1999 when she moved to Washington DC. Lissa was involved in the establishment of the Michigan Women’s Historical Center, and in promotion of the Women’s Sports Foundation and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
